"Mohs Lucrum Mihi - Death is my Reward."
At the outbreak of the First World War, South African Defence policy prevented the regiments of it's Active Defence Force from serving outside of South Africa. As a result, separate South African Infantry Regiments were raised for service in Northern Africa, and the Western Front. Nicknamed the "South African Scottish" the 4th South African Infantry Regiment was comprised of volunteers from the various Scottish units of the Active Defence Force, including the Cape Town Highlanders, Transvaal Scottish, and the Caledonian Societies of the Free State and Natal.
Fighting briefly against Turkish forces at the Suez Canal, the regiment was dispatched to France where it famously participated in the hard fought victory at Delville Wood, during the wider Battle of the Somme in 1916. Along with other regiments of the 1st South African Brigade, the South African Scottish captured and held Delville Wood stubbornly. The unit suffered massive casualties by the end of July, and had to to be reformed for additional service at Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Passchendaele, Marrieres Wood and Messines. Nearly destroyed once again later in the war, the unit was once again reformed in March 1918 for assignment with the 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Division. The unit was disbanded at the end of the First World War in 1918. Despite suffering a massive casualty rate throughout it's existence, the unit's tenacity in the face of near impossible odds over their years of campaigning in the France earned them a special place in collective memory of South Africa.
The patch itself features a stylized insignia of the South African Infantry Regiments of the First World War, superimposed on the tartan flash of the 4th South African Infantry Regiment - "The South African Scottish". The tartan featured is a simplified woven depiction of the Murray of Athol tartan flash, which distinguished the South African Scottish from other South African Infantry Regiments of the Great War.
Measures 2.5 x 2.5" with a hook velcro backing.
