Country of Origin: Portugal Genuine issue Portuguese military canteens, as utilized by it's colonial regiments during the "Ultramar" ("Overseas War" - Portuguese Colonial War) in Africa from 1961 to 1974. Issued as the "Modelo 964" originally, it was part of the Portuguese Pattern 64 system, which was adopted in the early phases of the long term counter insurgency war waged throughout it's African colonies. Taking a page out of contemporary American and British designs of the late 1950s, they moved towards a durable plastic construction. Additionally, there appears to have been some influence from the French pattern canteens of the era, based on the design of the cap. It was issued throughout the Colonial War, fitting into several different patterns of canteen pouches, and through the postwar years, and very similarly pattern canteens continued to be issued to Portuguese forces until the present day.
