Faithful reproduction of the British General Service Cap, as issued to British and Commonwealth troops during the Second World War.

The General Service Cap, itself a predecessor of the modern Commonwealth beret, was constructed as a stop-gap wartime piece of head dress more in line with a Scottish Balmoral hat, than a modern leather rimmed beret. The caps were first issued out in 1943 for British and Commonwealth soldiers going overseas, with distribution slowly being released to all other troops by the end of the war. It was constructed from a single piece of wool fabric with a cotton lining, which made for a more economical and faster construction process as opposed to the previous generation of Field Service/Service Dress caps. Each General Service Cap would have been worn with a unit cap badge at the wearer's front left, and also feature two grommet holes at the back for air flow. Though intended to be worn uniformly exactly one-inch from the eyebrow, the oversized nature of the caps tended to result in troops wearing them in a variety of odd angles and contortions. Ultimately, these caps were largely replaced with leather-rimmed French-style berets, that presented a more uniform look by the end of the war. However, that would not be before the General Service Caps made their appearance as a field worn soft headdress during the hard-won Italy and Normandy campaigns. It was during these campaigns that these caps saw extensive usage, as evidenced by the large amount of photographic evidence.
