Description
Country of Origin:
United Kingdom
First debuted in 1902 as the standardized "khaki" service dress (SD) uniform of the British Army, the accompanying 1902 SD cap was a peaked hat that would help to phase out the extremely unpopular Broderick cap which had been utilized as a contemporary headdress. The Pattern 1916 SD cap was an unstiffened version of this distinctive khaki peaked hat, first issued in the latter half of the First World War as an economy measure to outfit the large number of troops mobilize for British and Imperial service. This "trench cap" variation was worn with an individual's cap badge proudly displayed, whenever on leave, in garrison, or behind the lines when a helmet was not needed. The trench cap would also issued in large numbers outside of Britain, to troops in Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and India. It served as the standard headdress for British and Imperial troops until being phased out by the General Service Field Cap prior to the Second World War.
Don't be fooled by cheapo reproductions, that cost almost as much! Wartime photos show the hat as having a relatively larger profile above the wearer's head, almost on par with the SD caps, rather than laying flaccid as many other reproductions in recent years have been. As such, we've faithfully had these iconic pieces of headwear reproduced in a dark khaki serge wool in the correct shape, stamped British GS buttons, and leather chinstrap. These are a perfect piece of kit looking to start re-enacting the Great War, or for headdress and cap badge collectors as a display piece.
