Description

Southern Rhodesia was formed as a British Crown colony in 1923, taking over control of territories owned by Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company. Utilizing Rhodes' namesake, the relatively backwater African colony would prove their mettle through intensive infrastructure development and exceptional service during the Second World War. The colony was briefly merged with Northern Rhodesia to form a federation, before it was broken up in 1963 upon the independence of Zambia Amidst the backdrop of the Cold War and decolonization, Southern Rhodesia would cease to exist with the Unilateral Declaration of Independence on 11 November 1965. It would briefly be reemerge under the governance of Lord Soames in 1979, before it again ceased to exist with the independence of Zimbabwe.

Featuring the distinctively Rhodesian pioneer pickaxe, with the lion/thistle motifs of Cecil Rhodes' personal coat of arms, the Union Jack cantoned Southern Rhodesia Ensign remains a marvel of vexillology and an interesting piece of Rhodesiana for Whenwes, Zimbos, and enthusiasts!
