In Zimbabwe today, as was the case in Rhodesia years ago, the love that the people of that Zambezian country have always shared for the sport of Rugby Union has been and continues to be, a beacon of unity, no matter what the troubles were, or on what side of them people found themselves. Terrorist and Troopie alike would lay down their arms and pack the stadiums of Salisbury and Bulawayo to watch the Sables go head to head against the All Blacks, The Lions, The Tuskers, and The Springboks in a grim face-off to victory. The players today wear new uniforms of better material and different colour, but it was in these proud green and white stripes that The Sables, representing both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe, made the famed Haka-performing All Blacks to cry uncle on 27 July 1949 at Bulawayo's Hartsfield Rugby Ground, with a score of 10-8.
It was these proud stripes of white and green that shone resplendently upon The Black Diamond, Richard Tsimba, playing Centre for Zimbabwe in 1987, when he scored two tries for his nation against Romania at Eden Park in Auckland during the World Cup that year. It was these colours that Adrian Garvey sported at Murrayfield Statdium in Edenborough, when he scored two tries playing Tighthead Prop against the home team in 1991s Rugby World Cup. Sure the breast patch might have been exchanged for another in 1980, but these were the stripes worn by those giants and many others as they roamed the Earth, scrumming their way through anyone that dared stand against that honoured name: SABLE.
