The Rhodesian "Lion & Tusk" was first adopted as the corporate insignia of the British South Africa Company (BSAC) in the 19th century. First chartered by the Queen Victoria in 1889, it colonized and ruled what would become the crown colony of Southern Rhodesia in 1922. The "Lion & Tusk" featured a stylized representation of a striding lion, carrying an ivory tusk, representative of the dominant fauna and environment that was North and Southern Rhodesia. Upon the relinquishment of company control in 1922, the symbol fell into disuse as the motifs of the pickaxe, flame lily, and African fish eagle became prominent to represent the newly minted crown rule. However, the "Lion & Tusk" would see a dramatic return upon the Rhodesian Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965. Upon the declaration of the Republic of Rhodesia in 1970, the Lion & Tusk became the overwhelmingly dominant symbol of the new state, with motifs featured in the new national flag, the armed forces, and various coinage. It continues to representing the resilient rebels of the rogue African state, who alone held back the scourge of communism in Africa for over a decade.
