Description

Reproduction of British South Africa Police issued shoulder loops, that identified a member of the BSAP during the Rhodesian Bush War from approximately 1970 onwards.

These epaulette loops were issued in lieu of earlier pattern shoulder rank epaulettes, and were worn by both European Senior Patrol Officers who were regular members of the BSAP. Abbreviated as "SPO", Senior Patrol Officers were qualified members of the BSAP who served on active duty, with two rectangular bar representing their regular and senior status, as opposed to the wavy bars of BSAP Reserve and General Reserve members. Senior Patrol Officers were highly trained and had both operational and civil policing responsibilities, making them integral to the overall Rhodesian war effort. Working hand in hand with the African constables and junior Patrol Officers in car teams, they specialized in general law enforcement, intelligence gathering, ballistic/forensic analysis, and counter-insurgency warfare. They were subordinate to the Section Officer (SO), who had functional role of a senior non-commissioned officer.
