Description
Reproduction Rhodesian Army 2nd Lieutenant rank badges, as worn by members of the Rhodesian Security Forces from 1965-1980. We have embroidered the standard style abridged Rhodesian "pips" onto a standard olive shoulder board. Given how close these are to original examples, we did not include the distinctive production "v-notch" at the back of these rank badges, so they can never be passed off as originals - shame on you if you try it!
As the Rhodesian Army retained much of the same rank and section/platoon level organization of the pre-independence Southern Rhodesia and Federation military forces, the rank of "2nd Lieutenant" remained in use. This rank would be granted to 2nd Lieutenants who had continued to show leadership potential as junior officers, and was a stepping stone towards a company level command as a Captain.
They could be expected to competently instruct, lead, and advise a platoon level formation, or even act in the capacity of a company second-in-command or commander. This would be achieved through the Lieutenants own initiative, and through the support of senior non-commissioned officers who supported the officer at the same levels of command. The School of Infantry assessed men for officer potential early on, with recruits being interviewed and physically assessed for leadership potential within the first few days of their mandatory National Service.
Even if one was chosen for officer training, the "wash-out" rate for Rhodesian officers remained high throughout the war, producing a high standard of leader, which modern militaries continue to study at an academic and practical level. The Rhodesian Army officer was the best in the world at that time, producing even 2nd Lieutenants that were proficient in soldier skills, tactical casualty care, technical skills and yes - even map and compass navigation!
Sold in pairs, one for each shirt epaulette! Perfect for re-enactment use, or for display purposes!
