Description
Decal featuring the distinctive insignia of the Rhodesia Regiment as it existed during the Rhodesian Bush War, superimposed onto the red diamond backing that would have seen on a serviceman's beret.
The Rhodesia Regiment was by far the largest regiment in the Rhodesian Army with a battle record stretching back to the Second Boer War in 1899. Original raised the "Southern Rhodesian Volunteers" as a mounted infantry formation, it was served with distinction throughout the Boer War, and into the First World War during the South West African Campaign. Fighting alongside the legendary scout and adventurer Frederick Selous, the African-born regiment was able to handle the conditions of African bush fighting far better than other European regiments. Despite one of the highest per capita casualty rates among any Entente regiment of the First World War, the Rhodesia Regiment carried itself with pride and distinction, with 40% of Rhodesian male population serving on active service during the height of the war. During the Second World War, the regiment was broken up to serve with the British and South African army, to prevent the devastating effects of the massive lost of manpower Rhodesia experienced after the First World War.
Several numbered battalions and independent companies would ultimately be raised during the Rhodesian Bush War, mostly made up of white national servicemen. The unit was a regular in the COIN operations of the Rhodesian Bush War, fighting alongside regiments such as the Rhodesian Light Infantry and Rhodesian African Rifles. The regiment would perfect the "Fireforce" that brought the Rhodesians much operation success, but at a heavy cost. Half strength battalions and companies would be hastily formed by the end of the war, including the notorious 7 Independent Company, led by Bob Denard. By 1979, the regiment was a shell of it's former self and past glories. The regiment functionally ceased to exist after the creation of the Zimbabwe republic.
