The distinctive crest of the Northern Rhodesia Regiment superimposed onto their stable belt colors of red, white and green, which were inherited from the Northern Rhodesia Police and North-Eastern Rhodesia Constabulary.
The Northern Rhodesia Regiment was formed in 1933, as during the Second World War had grown to nine different battalions. It would serve with distinction in campaigns through Somaliland, Madagascar, the Middle East, Ceylon and Burma. Under the motto "Different in Race, Equal in Fidelity", the regiment would continue to service with distinction during the Malayan Emergency from 1953 to 1955. The period of Rhodesian Federation was a turbulent one for the regiment, particular in the aftermath of it's breakdown in 1963. By 1964 the regiment would be re-named as the Zambia Regiment as part of the newly independent state of Zambia. Unlike the bulk of Southern Rhodesia units which had their traditions and battle honors removed after Zimbabwean independence, the Zambia Regiment remains a direct continuation of the original Northern Rhodesia Regiment. To this day, the 6 battalions of the modern Zambia Regiment continue to parade with their regimental mascots, the noble crane, and carry on the legacy of the original Northern Rhodesia Regiment.
