Description
"Let's Go South Africa"
South African forces were mobilized for the Second World War similarly to the mobilization of men and resources for the First World War. An active and vocal minority within South Africa opposed efforts to join a "British" war effort, with the memory of the Anglo-Boer war still very relevant in the minds of most South Africans. However, Jan Smuts' government managed to quashed the Axis-aligned Ossewabrandwag movement early on, and South Africa rapidly mobilized forces. The active force of barely over three thousand volunteers, largely trained in light infantry tactics exclusively for African bush warfare, was expanded to a conventional force of over 345,000 by the end of the war. The bulk of these forces were European volunteers, with a sizable minority of black African and Colored troops serving in non-combatant and support roles.
Unlike the First World War, which saw the mobilization of temporary expeditionary units, or individual South Africans serving as attachees to other British units, the South African military organization allowed them to fight under the colors of their local regiments. Serving in nearly every theatre of the Second World War, the South Africans would earn regimental and national glory at the cost of over 9,000 men killed in action. The memory of this exceptional mobilization and service would serve to fit the pro-Afrikaaner propaganda of the mid-1950s, and the formation of the new South African Defence Force in 1957. This faithful reproduction of a poster distributed early in the Second World War represents the spirit and war fervor of the period.
Measures 12 inches x 18 inches, printed as a full bleed color on extra-thick 1.5mm glossy stock. Please note, the Fireforce Ventures watermark is only on the preview image, and not on the poster you will receive.
