Description
"They’re Rough tough trigger squeezers. Their current aim in combat is to “qualify” every man in the company... and to qualify as a “K Kompany Kraut Killer” it’s necessary that the aspirant to the select group kill at least five Germans. The “Kraut Killers” represent the inner circle of Co. “K”, 358th Inf. and the membership is steadily growing with every day. Nearly every man in the company has flattened enough Germans to gain admission to the organization of liquidation. A man can become a charter member of the “K Kompany Kraut Killers” upon recommendation of his platoon leader and acceptance by the Company Commander, Capt. Robert B. Mcholland of Hurley, MO. The “K.K.K.K.” were written into the pages of combat history in a lengtthy feature of “War Week” in the October 7th issue. Photographs of the units assault on the town of Fontoy, France were inserted in the story."
- 90th Division Daily Newspaper, September 1944
A tactical copy of a rare Second World War USGI patch, unofficially issued to select members of the "Tough 'Ombres" of the 90th Infantry Division. Originally commissioned by Captain Robert B. "Mac" McHolland, it was intended to recognize men in his "K" Company, 358th Infantry Regiment, for having 5 confirmed enemy kills. Fabricated by French civilians in September 1944, it adorned the breast pockets of the "K" Company, 358th Infantry Regiment men who had scored the prerequisite number of kills. Despite the bravado, it provided a huge morale boost to the company, within the a division that was notorious for it's low morale during the Normandy Campaign.
Sadly, Captain McHolland was killed in action on 24 November 1944 while defending his command post Rhineland. He and two other enlisted men had routed the enemy and acounted for 14 enemy dead, and forced another 78 Germans to surrender. "Mac" attempted then to rescue two wounded men, but was fatally wounded. For his final actions between 23-24 November, in storming a position earlier on the 23rd, and his successful CP defense on the 24th, he was posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Cross. In addition to the rare DSC award, he was also awarded two Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart.
The legend of the "K" Company Kraut Killers lives on, in this tribute patch to the fighting men of Texas and Oklahoma in the Tough 'Ombres of the 90th Division!
