The original colonial flag of British Hong Kong, first adopted in 1959, as no other distinctive colonial flag for Hong Kong existed before this. It features the standard blue Union Jack ensign, with the lion flanked crest of Hong Kong.
The British Empire dutifully watched over it's colony in Hong Kong from 1841 until 1997 when it was handed over to the People's Republic of China. It was British officers and men, fighting alongside the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps, Canadians, Indians and Free French soldiers in it's darkest hour during the Battle of Hong Kong. Over 2,000 Commonwealth and native Hong Kong troops died in the one month resistance against the overwhelming Japanese attack. Many more would die in prisoner of war camps in the Far East. The few who survived and escaped fought on in China, and the jungles of Southeast Asia. They would eventually reclaim Hong Kong again in the Empire's name in 1945.
A generation later, the little island colony would be called again into duty, fighting against the growing threat of communist. It exploded into massive riots in 1967, and the assassination of radio satirist Lam Bun by communist thugs. A combined force of British troops and Hong Kong police kept the invading Chinese insurrectionists at bay. Through their sacrifices, they became the jewel of the British Empire and remain an economic powerhouse today.
The memory of the struggles and amazing successes of the tiny colony continue to ring true today. It's no surprise that the flag is still flown proudly in Hong Kong, despite calls from perpetual whines from Beijing based communists that it should be banned. Display the colors, that have represent the story of the defiant little colony, that remains the jewel of the Orient.
