Country or Origin:
The Mk. 2 Lightweight Gas Mask Bag was issued as one of several variations of replacement for the excessively bulky early pattern Mk.. 6 haversacks that more resembled the Small Box Respirators carriers of the Great War. Featuring a slimmed down and simplified design, it was intended to be fitted with a standard Mk. 3/4/5 General Service Respirator which had been first issued in the mid-1920s. The bag itself was fitted with a standard webbing shoulder strap, and a long piece of sewn in twine to be tied snuggly on the wearers body, to ensure quick access to the gas mask within. It also featured two buttoned auxiliary side compartments for replacement parts and repair kits.
Due extremely limited usage of chemical warfare during the Second World War as opposed to the trenches of the Western Front in the Great War, British and Commonwealth troops would often supplement their webbing loadouts with these bags. Despite orders to the contrary, these bags routinely saw usage as lightweight haversacks that carried cartridge clips, Bren gun magazines, grenades, rockets, pioneer tools, and other goodies for front line use.
