Country of Origin: United Kingdom
Produced by Mills Equipment Company in 1958 for the British Army to replace the aging Pattern 37 and 44 webbing systems, the Pattern 58 webbing system was an ubiquitous piece of kit for Cold War era British soldiers. Constructed from a sturdy but relatively lightweight olive canvas material, the entire system was designed to be fully modular, and adaptable to a wide range of weapon systems and technical requirements. Additionally, it moved the weight of otherwise heavy fighting order and sustainment gear from the wearer's shoulder, to the wearer's hip.
The result, was a piece of kit that stood the test of time and was copied extensively by South Africa (Pattern 61), Rhodesia (Pattern 69), Iraq, Pakistan, Kenya and other former British colonial possessions. The system was ultimately phased out in British service by the PLCE system in the 1990s, which bore many of the same design theories as the Pattern 58. However, it continued to see final "hurrahs" in African usage during the Sierra Leone Civil War, and Iraqi usage during the early phases of the American led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The canteen pouch of this pouch was intended to fit a sBritish Pattern 58 1-quart canteen, but can be adaptable to most modern canteens including the standard USGI style canteen.
