Description

Formed relatively late in the war in 1943, the 6th South African Armoured Division was created through the refitting and retraining of the former South African 1st Infantry Division. The South African 1st Division had been battle-tested through the rigours of the North Africa campaign, but suffered from logistical issues and a severe shortage of manpower. As a result, the inevitable happened in 1943, with the conversion of the unit into a smaller, better supplied armored unit. It was at this time that the volunteers from Southern Rhodesia would first be fielded as an armored force, dispersed between the various divisional brigades.

This decal pays homage to these fighting men, who would lead South Africa and Rhodesia's involvement throughout the Italy campaign through the Gothic Line, and towards total victory. The decal features the formation colors that would have been worn on uniforms or used for vehicle recognition. It also features inclusion of the distinctive "Rhodesia" tab, which Rhodesian soldiers in the division proudly donned to denote their nationality and heritage while serving with the South Africans. These motifs are superimposed onto the South African Union tri-color of orange, white and blue.
