Description
The legendary Harlem Hellfighters of the US 369th Infantry Regiment's distinctive hallowed silver snake insignia during their service in the First World War.
Called into active federal service in 1917, the nucleus of the unit was drawn from the New York National Guard's 15th Regiment, and was a segregated regiment with enlisted men exclusively African-American. The bulk of the men were volunteers who sought to advance their societal standing in American society, and their motivations reflected in the exceptional gallantry of their service record. Arriving in France in April 1918, they were seconded to the 6th French Division, and equipped with French equipment. On the front line for 191 days, the unit was seldom reinforced, but never lost an inch of ground, and fought with incredible bravery as shock troops. The 369th would spend more time on the front lines of the Great War than any other American unit, with hundreds of individual gallantry decorations, and a unit level French Croix de Guerre.
They paid for this with over 1,500 killed and wounded, the highest of any individual American regiment during the First World War. However, no man of the 369th would ever be captured by the enemy. The regiment returned home, and paraded through the streets of New York on 17 February 1919. The 369th as the "Harlem Hellfighters" disbanded a few weeks afterwards at Camp Upton, but would be perpetuated by another segregated unit during the Second World War, and a modern US Army National Guard brigade.
Produced in a 2 x 2" size with hook velcro backing.
