Description
Faithfully reproduced colours of the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade, reconstructed from the now tattered original Brigade colors. It bears quad emblems of the Polish paratrooper, St. Michael defeating a serpent "Surge Polonia" script, and the following battle honors:
Warszawa 1942
Arnhem-Driel 1944
The unit had it's share of bad luck through it's existence. Despite months of intensive paratrooper training, the unit's missions in Normandy were constantly cancelled. During the Warsaw Uprising, Soviet refusals prevented them from supporting their countrymen.
With exceptional tenacity, they assembled in their dropzone within an hour, and fought towards their objective at Oosterbeek. Suffering from massive casualties and low on ammunition, the unit was a spent force by 24 September, when an attempt to cross the Rhine River had failed. The unit fought as the rearguard for the 1st British Airborne as it evacuated on 26 September. On this day in 1944, a small number of Poles who had been trapped with other British Paras across the Rhine, would by the famed "Band of Brothers" of Company "E", 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
The unit's fighting reputation was never in question, but their poor utilization by British high command was nothing short of tragic. Post-war, most of the surviving men faced persecution and death in Communist Poland. The gallant commander, General Sosabowski, having fought with exceptional distinction during the First World War, the Polish Soviet War, and during the initial invasion of Poland, was scapegoated for the failures of Market Garden. He would never return to his native Poland, and would only find work as a factory worker in the UK. He died in obscurity in 1967.
Produced in the standard 2.5 x 2.5" size with hook velcro backing, similar in specification to milspec unit patches.
