Description
The French 157th Division was formed for service in the First World War, and existed as a uniquely cosmopolitan unit that encompassed both French and American troops. The unit saw action shortly after it's formation in 1915 during the early fighting in Champagne. Over the next few years, the unit was whittled down by the deadlock of trench warfare. It was badly mauled during fighting along the Aisne in Northern France in the spring of 1917, and had to be withdrawn from the line to be reconstituted in early 1918.
As part of this reorganization, it incorporated the segregated US 371st and 372nd Infantry Regiments at the end of the war. These "Red Hand" soldiers of the 371st and 372nd would sport the distinctive insignia of their assigned French division as they fought through the Champagne-Marne, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Each unit would receive unit level Croix de Guerre from the French government, for their exceptional service as shock troops. The 371st and 372nd reverted back to American command after the war in December 1918, shortly after the French 157th Division demobilized.
Produced in a 2.5" diameter size with hook velcro backing.
